This map shows the locations of Mars landers and rovers. Most have used orbiting spacecraft as communications satellites to relay their data to Earth. A radio signal from Mars takes about eight minutes to reach Earth.
InSight is a Mars lander in operation. Its primary objective is to study the earliest evolutionary processes that shaped Mars. By studying the size, thickness, density, and overall structure of Mars's core, mantle, and crust, as well as the rate at which heat escapes from the interior of the planet.
InSight will provide a glimpse into the evolutionary processes of all of the rocky planets in the inner Solar System.
