Dragon1 has expanded the ArchiMate modeling language with several additional viewpoints, including the Enterprise Innovation viewpoint.
An organization is considering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for customer service. The Enterprise Innovation Viewpoint is used to visualize the impact of this innovation, showing how AI supports new business capabilities, which processes are changing, which technologies are required, and which strategic goals are being met. This helps inform investment decisions and plan a phased implementation.
How does Archimate view viewpoints?
In ArchiMate, viewpoints play a central role. A viewpoint determines how a specific part of the architecture is presented, tailored to the needs of particular stakeholders. The goal is to provide relevant and understandable insights into complex architectural aspects, tailored to a specific context or issue.
A viewpoint defines which elements and relationships are shown, from which perspective, and for what purpose. This ensures consistency, reusability, and clarity in communication. For example, a Business Process Viewpoint shows the interaction between processes, actors, and products, while a Technology Viewpoint focuses on infrastructure components and technical dependencies.
ArchiMate distinguishes three main types of viewpoints:
A specific ArchiMate Viewpoint is chosen based on the intended use: analysis, design, communication, or decision-making. By adopting the correct perspective, an architect can effectively inform and engage stakeholders without overwhelming them with irrelevant details.
Using standardized viewpoints increases the quality of architectural models and facilitates collaboration between disciplines. Moreover, this aligns well with agile and iterative working methods, where continuous coordination between strategy, design, and implementation is crucial.
