Some people think that Building architecture cannot be compared to Software architecture. This because they say building architecture is focused on lasting structures and software architecture is focused on change and adaptation. In my opinion they are very well comparable. For starters, what is Architecture: Dragon1 defines the Architecture of a structure as the Total Concept of a structure. Software architects (only the good ones) make use of software patterns, concepts and principles like data hiding, abstraction, modularity, broker, service orientation and integration and more. They collect requirements and strategy from their client & stakeholders first of course and based on that and their experience they create architecture designs (at conceptual, logical and physcial level) using the software concepts they carefully select. A software architect (only a good one) is a designer of the high level structures of software systems and supervisor of the realization of software systems. As simple as that. Quality features like long lasting, change and adapation can be made part of any program of requirements. Building architects also design buildings that should be able to change & adept. And software architects design software that should last. If the word architecture in those two worlds cannot be compared, people should use a different word than architecture behind the word software. As long as you use the word architecture, you may NOT change the definition all of a sudden. Also: why would a software architect NOT want to work with a contract, program of requirements, sketches, designs, plans and change orders (see previous post)? I'd say that a software architect without using these documents only makes a mess out of it and does not produce anything useful.

A certified architect of churches, bridges and buildings NEVER works without a Client/Architect Services Agreement, Design & Construction Contract, Program of Requirements, Sketches, Designs, Construction Plans and Change Orders. These documents help to protect the project and its success. A certified architect primarily designs and supervises the construction of a building structure. We have created the Dragon1 open EA method years ago so that Enterprise Architecture learns a bit from building archtecture. That is why in the new and updated textbook Dragon1 Fundamentals, that we are going to publish in Q4 2017, these typical architecture documents are made more prominent. We need to mature as EA field.

First, watch the screenshot below of Google for "Architects of Churches". Next type in "Architects of Enterprises" in Google. Notice the difference? Our field of Enterprise Architecture still has a long way to go for anyone to get recognized. I say: the way we currently work as enterprise architects is not good enough. Far from it. It does not have great results. YET. I myself will update the text books on the Dragon1 open EA Method in Q4 with what is needed today by enterprises and how EA fits into that. I have a lot of feedback and ideas to improve the method, framework and modeling language that is part of Dragon1. I suggest the people from TOGAF and other frameworks also take a better and close to what enterprises need and how the world is changing. And if it takes updating the text books of Dragon1 and TOGAF and others every year until we are there, then so be it.
