What is Landscaping? Landscaping is the process of creating high-level visual overviews of the enterprise that map business, information, applications, technology, and governance in relation to one another. Landscaping provides context and insight across multiple domains, showing what exists, how components are connected, where they are positioned, and how they support strategic objectives.

What is a Landscape?

A Landscape is a high-level visualization of a coherent set of entities, grouped based on function or purpose, showing what the entities are made of and capable of. Common landscapes for organizations include the application, IT, and process landscapes.

Creating the Landscape for you in close Collaboration

We have created a landscaping service for you, that if you want, we can create a Landscape for you, and you and your team members can give feedback anytime, anywhere via the Dragon1 Viewer on your iPad and Smartphone.

The collaboration platform and its specialized tools enable close collaboration between you and us via the web applications Data Manager, Visual Designer, and Viewer.

How does Architecture Landscaping work?

Suppose you want to create an IT landscape:

  • We will first create a project or campaign with a deadline and plan the activities or schedule the tasks to execute.
  • You will then collect the necessary and available data, for instance, in an Excel sheet.
  • Next, we will upload the data automatically and enrich the data manually.
  • Then we will build a visual Landscape using the data, and you will comment on the landscaping architecture visualization.
  • We will iterate this cycle four or five times in two or three weeks.

We will be using all the important features in the web application to perform the task:

  • In the Architecture Repository we will upload and import the data. We will also show you how to do it yourself. You can take over this work at any time if you prefer.

  • In the Visual Designer, we will build a model using the data and build a view and visualization on top of the model. And as with the Architecture Repository, we will show you how we do that. Also, the tutorials offer a comprehensive guide to using the Dragon1 software. We will eventually provide you with everything you need to do it yourself.

  • In the Viewer, you will watch the published intermediate versions of the Landscape and be able to comment on it. The landscape features include filtering data, selecting data, viewing changes made, and messaging directly to individuals involved in the product's workflow.

Often, landscaping is part of a bigger plan. If you prefer, you can create in time all the deliverables, working with a single source of truth, thus increasing the quality of data you use.

The Big Five Landscapes

Dragon1 is not only an EAM platform. It is also a method for Enterprise Architecture. As part of that, we have defined the Big Five:

  • #1, Application Architecture Landscapes
  • #2, Process Architecture / Process Application Landscapes
  • #3, IT / Technology Landscapes
  • #4, Information / Data Architecture Landscapes
  • #5, Project / Archimate / Governance Landscapes
